Medallions: Just for Fun! -Virtual

Medallions: Just for Fun! -Virtual

October 27, Sunday, 1-4 pm MT.
Limit: 25 students | Taught with Two Hands Paperie
Cost: $40. See the Class Materials list for what you need to have on hand.

These colorful medallions might be just for fun, but they’re absolutely the perfect setup for diving into the magical world of watercolors! They’re easy for beginners and a great way for those with some experience to hone their skills. These medallions are circular, which watercolor artist Lexis Krieg calls the most approachable shape. Circles are also fabulously fun for just getting rid of the white page. In fact, Lexis says they’re the first layer of many of her paintings because their curved shape and organic nature easily translate into a variety of compositions.

There’s great value in painting a collection of medallions during the class. You’ll have ample time to practice controlling the amount of water you use and the consistency of the paint. Take note of how you move your brush and the pressure you apply. Since the medallions are quick to make, you can readily experiment with such techniques as layering colors and painting into wet areas. Magic!

The medallions are fun to make and fun to use. Cut them out for tags, paste them on gifts as a decoration, or incorporate them into collage and multi-media work. Lexis made some to use as place cards for friends at her birthday party. She personalized each medallion by writing affirmations and words of friendship on the back. What a way to add a special touch to a celebration!

Materials Students Need

  • A set of watercolors with at least 10 different colors. Results are better with at least student grade pan or tube paints. Lexis suggests the Lil' Watercolor Paint Pods- Set of 36 Colors ($) or Prima Confections Watercolor Pans, which are available in several colorways ($$), as inexpensive but nice sets. A set of 10 or 12 of your favorite colors is fine.

  • Lexis suggests four large sheets of paper (8”x10” or 9”x12”), but this is a perfect class to use what you have around. Hot or cold press are fine. You’ll need enough paper to paint 10 to 12 two-inch circles. The more paper you have on hand, the more opportunities to practice in class.

  • Some small pieces of the same watercolor paper to practice on

  • One round brush in size 6, 8, or 10

  • Drafting Tape

  • Black Pen - Zig Memory System Writer Dual Tip, Paper Mate Flair or the Tombow Fudenosuke brush pen.

  • Assorted pens in various colors. Lexis recommends Gelly Roll Moonlight Bold Point Pens and Gelly Roll Glaze 3D Pens. Uni Posca Paint Marker Pens (PC-3M) are a fun choice, too.

  • One container for water

  • Paper towels

  • Scissors

  • Optional: White Posca Paint Pen PC-1MC

  • Optional: small spray bottle of water for wetting your watercolors

  • Optional: small piece of something sturdy, such a cutting mat, chip board, or masonite, for taping down the watercolor paper.

  • Optional: hair dryer to speed up the drying process

Divine Feminine Altar-Virtual

Divine Feminine Altar-Virtual

Divine Feminine Altar – Virtual

September 29, Sunday, 1-3:30pm MT. Max: 25 students.
Taught with Two Hands Paperie
Cost: $40. See the Class Materials list for what you need to have on hand.

The divine feminine is the intuitive, compassionate, and creative energy inside of all of us, and tapping into it is important for balance and well-being. Celebrate your divine feminine in this new class with Lexis Krieg. Lexis is a Denver-based artist who uses meditation and watercolor art to help others connect to their inner creativity. Her classes are for both beginners and those with experience.

The workshop begins with a short meditation to guide you as you connect to your divine feminine. After the meditation, Lexis coaches you in processing what you learned by creating a joyful layered watercolor painting.  She calls the painting an altar, and it’s meant to act as a reminder of this new inner knowing when you return to your daily life. In the center of the altar is a space to write down a personal mantra, intention, or insight that reveals itself to you during class.

Before starting your altar, practice making different marks with your brushes and play with color combinations. Lexis also demonstrates some simple pen doodles for you to work with. These decorative lines add interest and depth to your watercolor altar. (Interestingly, this practice time leaves your mind free to process what you learned while meditating.)

For the rest of the class time, Lexis works alongside everyone and offers suggestions while everyone focuses on painting. Writing a personal word or phrase in the center is the final, and often revealing, step.

Lexis’s class is rich in technique and design, but its true value lies in connecting you to your divine feminine. There is some optional pre-class work, which should take no more than thirty minutes. See the Class Materials list for more information.

  • At least one piece of hot press watercolor paper, 6x8” or 8x10”. (Speedball’s Fluid Watercolor Paper Hot Press Finish works nicely)

  • Some small pieces of the same watercolor paper to practice on

  • Brushes: use what you have: one round brush, size 6, 8, or 10 plus one flat brush 1/4 or 1/2 in.

  • Drafting Tape

  • Black Pen - it doesn’t have to be waterproof as long as it writes well over watercolor paint. The Zig Memory System Writer Dual Tip, the Paper Mate Flair, or the Tombow Fudenosuke brush pen all work well.

  • Assorted pens in various colors. Lexis recommends Gelly Roll Moonlight Bold Point Pens and Gelly Roll Glaze 3D Pens. Uni Posca Paint Marker Pens (PC-3M) are a fun choice, too.

  • One container for water

  • Paper towels

  • Optional: White Posca Paint Pen PC-1MC

  • Optional: small spray bottle of water for wetting your watercolors

  • Optional: small piece of something sturdy, such a cutting mat, chip board, or masonite, for taping down the watercolor paper.

  • Optional: journal or blank paper for making notes after your meditation

  • Optional: hair dryer to speed up the drying process

Artzine-Ready, Set, Draw!

Artzine – Ready, Set, Draw! In-Person

September 14, Saturday, 1-4pm.
Taught with Two Hands Paperie in Boulder, CO
Max: 6 students.
Cost: $95; includes most materials but see the list of Class Materials.

There’s never enough time, is there, to get everything done and make art. Like many creatives, Denver artist Lexis Krieg wants to make the most of the free moments that open up during the day. Her solution? A little “Artzine” that she created at the last minute for a weekend trip. She knew she had to think simple if she hoped to create while on vacation.

Rescuing a large watercolor test sheet from her studio, Lexis folded and cut the single sheet of paper into a little journal. She clipped 3 pens – a black pen and 2 coordinating colors – to the front and was set to draw on the go. The Artzine turned out to be an inspired idea! Her little book wasn’t as formal as a regular journal, so she found it easy to be free and play with ideas. Both the process and limited materials made her look forward to finding moments to draw, even when it felt like there wasn’t enough time or space.

Join Lexis in the store to make an Artzine like hers and to learn what rules she made up for herself to keep the art quick, easy, and on demand. Lexis has prepared a worksheet of marks and patterns for you to copy, or go ahead and create your own. Use your Artzine for art on the go, as a simple travel journal, or as a way to capture inspiration.

Materials for class:

  • For students to bring:

    • Favorite drawing/writing tool in a few colors. Some work better over watercolor than others. Suggestions: Gelly Roll, Posca Paint pens, or colored pencils. The pencils can be standard or watercolor pencils. We’ll supply a black pen

    • Optional: There are watercolors and brushes available for you to use in class, but bring in your own if you’d like to work with familiar materials. Lexis suggests a set with fewer than 10 colors. Results are better with at least student grade paints. Some basic sets that work are Ooly Lil Pods ($), Prang Oval Watercolor Set ($), Cotman Water Colour Sketchers Pocket Box ($$), Koi Watercolor Pocket Field Sketch Travel Kit ($$), and Prima Watercolor Confections sets ($$).

    • Optional: Favorite watercolor brushes. You are supplied 2 brushes to keep.

    • Optional: Small spray bottle of water for wetting your watercolors

    • Optional: color and pattern inspiration in the form of magazines, books, cards, textiles, etc.

  • Class fee includes materials provided by Two Hands Paperie:

    • Two brushes to keep: short handle Fan brush, size 2, and Round brush, size 12

    • Paper Mate Flair, medium black pen for students to take home

    • Paper to create 2 ArtZine booklets

    • Water containers/water

    • Paper towels

    • Small scraps of watercolor paper to practice on

    • Drafting/masking tape

    • Use of watercolor sets + brushes

Dive into the magical medium of watercolor! This class is led by Lexis Krieg, a Denver-based artist who’s known for her joyful, vibrant colors and intricate linework. Both are evident in her class samples, which remind us of exotic ornamental tiles. With their layers and layers of color and interlocking pen patterns, it’s hard to parse out exactly how she created them. Though they’re visually complex, they’re simple to do one layer at a time.

Lexis starts by providing an overview of color theory and discussing the benefits of working in warm and cool colors separately. To help you recognize what makes a completed painting, she also talks about the elements of design. The guiding principle for this class is “What would happen if I do this …?” Lexis encourages lots of experimentation!

You’ll paint on two separate sheets of watercolor paper so that one sheet has time to dry while you work on the other. Painting a cool layer followed by a warm layer, then vice versa, is designed to help you understand your own feelings on color choices. See how a complex design is built up by laying down simple brush strokes on a grid, and explore how brushes can make a variety of marks to add contrast. Add an additional layer of detailed pen work and experience how much more interest and depth it creates in your composition.

We really like how Lexis offers a process with skills and tools that can be used to develop a personal style. She’d love to see what you create! There is some optional pre-class work, which should take no more than thirty minutes. See the Materials List for more information.

This online class will be recorded and made available to class participants for 10 days after the class.

Discovering Your Intuitive Colors

This workshop is taught in partnership with Two Hands Paperie in Boulder, Colorado.

In person class
Saturday, April 6, 1-4pm
Investment:
$115.00. Includes printed color theory workbook designed by Lexis, color wheel + vocabulary resource sheet
Limit: 6 students. All participants must be 15 years or older.

Class Details

Have some color fun! Join Lexis Krieg for a class devoted completely to color without regard to medium. Lexis is a local artist and graphic designer who’s known for her colorful designs, and thinks the best way to understand color is through observation and experimentation. She’s designed lots of hands-on exercises to teach the basic theory and provide a color wheel vocabulary, but there’s a twist: you use your favorite colors instead of the more familiar ones. The goal is for you to tap into your inner sense of color and increase your confidence when working with it.

There’s some pre-class work that involves going through random paper scraps in your own collection or in magazines. Pull out the scraps you love, then sort through and organize them. They’re the raw material for tapping into your intuitive sense of color. During class, analyze their characteristics – hue, shade, tint, tone, complementary, analogous, cool, warm – and how your scraps relate to the color wheel. The result of the exercises is a unique and personal color booklet for you to use in future creative projects.

Toward the end of class, use the paper scraps to create a personal color “map” that represents your favorite colors. An important part of the class is seeing each person’s color map and talking about the differences. Eye-opening! The map measures 8.5x11” and can easily be framed and hung as a visual reminder of what you discovered in class.

Read the blog post about what make this class on color so unique.

We like how Lexis adds pen lines to watercolor shapes to create patterns, and how she keeps up an ongoing dialogue as she creates a painting together with you. For example, as she adds an element to the left-hand corner of the page she tells you why – in this case to help balance the composition. She’ll also say “Hmmm… I don’t like what I just did”, explain the reason, and then correct the problem. (Nice to know that even experienced artists don’t get it right on the first try!)

Lexis encourages students to create their own composition rather than make an exact copy of hers. She came to watercolor later in her career and feels that it’s the perfect medium when there doesn’t seem to be any time or enough space to create. Learn why she thinks so as she shares her watercolor practice with you. As with Lexis’s other classes, what we really like about the way she teaches is that she offers a process with skills and tools that can be used to develop a personal style. She, and we, would love to see what you create!

Hiya! I‘m Lexis, artist + educator + mama.

I love helping women reconnect with their creativity!
My simple, playful process guides women to step away from the daily hustle + find time for themselves with joy + authenticity.

I'm a highly sensitive, introverted empath + mom of two imaginative girls. With 20 years of experience in design, marketing + fine art, I create playful, calming art experiences. Born in Alaska + raised across OR, WI, and MN—where I took every art class available—I’ve called Colorado home for over 15 years. Whether I’m barefoot in my backyard, cooking from scratch, or redecorating, I’m all about bringing color, order + joy into life.
