There’s never enough time, is there, to get everything done and make art. Like many creatives, Denver artist Lexis Krieg wants to make the most of the free moments that open up during the day. Her solution? A little “Artzine” that she created at the last minute for a weekend trip. She knew she had to think simple if she hoped to create while on vacation.
Rescuing a large watercolor test sheet from her studio, Lexis folded and cut the single sheet of paper into a little journal. She clipped 3 pens – a black pen and 2 coordinating colors – to the front and was set to draw on the go. The Artzine turned out to be an inspired idea! Her little book wasn’t as formal as a regular journal, so she found it easy to be free and play with ideas. Both the process and limited materials made her look forward to finding moments to draw, even when it felt like there wasn’t enough time or space.
Join Lexis in the store to make an Artzine like hers and to learn what rules she made up for herself to keep the art quick, easy, and on demand. Lexis has prepared a worksheet of marks and patterns for you to copy, or go ahead and create your own. Use your Artzine for art on the go, as a simple travel journal, or as a way to capture inspiration.
Materials for class:
For students to bring:
Favorite drawing/writing tool in a few colors. Some work better over watercolor than others. Suggestions: Gelly Roll, Posca Paint pens, or colored pencils. The pencils can be standard or watercolor pencils. We’ll supply a black pen
Optional: There are watercolors and brushes available for you to use in class, but bring in your own if you’d like to work with familiar materials. Lexis suggests a set with fewer than 10 colors. Results are better with at least student grade paints. Some basic sets that work are Ooly Lil Pods ($), Prang Oval Watercolor Set ($), Cotman Water Colour Sketchers Pocket Box ($$), Koi Watercolor Pocket Field Sketch Travel Kit ($$), and Prima Watercolor Confections sets ($$).
Optional: Favorite watercolor brushes. You are supplied 2 brushes to keep.
Optional: Small spray bottle of water for wetting your watercolors
