backyard summer party

Believe it or not, you don’t have to purchase a fresh set of coordinating backyard decor to host a delightful *Anthropology inspired* backyard summer soiree.

You probably already have most of the things you need to pull together a stunning, imperfect outdoor party.

So don’t let limiting beliefs about your space restrict your ability to throw a brilliant party. I’m here to share my simple tips for intentionally + purposefully elevating your space using items you already have on hand—or can easily pick up at the thrift store.

It IS possible to create a beautifully imperfect backyard party. Whether your theme is Rosé + Charcuterie, Summer Solstice or Summer Soirée, just follow my simple tips to create the party you’ve always wanted to host, but been too worried to plan.

Getting started

I truly believe if you love the item then it will go with the things already in your home. Choosing items based on this strategy, rather than deciding if it will “go” with your decor, ensures you can rearrange seamlessly + creates a beautiful on purpose mismatched look.

This decorating tip comes in handy when you’re ready to style your backyard party because you’ll be using items you already own + love.

Take a walk around your whole home + notice your absolute favorite items. This will give you a good baseline for pulling together your party decorations. Start to notice if you have any trends in color, pattern or texture.

Now you’re ready to start creating your magical backyard party.

9 tips to host your delightful backyard Summer Soirée

Follow my tips below to intentionally + purposefully elevate your outdoor space using items you already have on hand. You CAN create a beautifully imperfect backyard party with ease!

1. Identify your seating options

  • You’ll want to cluster chairs into conversation centers. Depending on the number of guests expected, you may want more than one area

  • Don’t be afraid to use dining room chairs, folding camp chairs, foot stools + poufs

2. Relocate ALL your pillows

  • Go ahead, scour your home for all your throw pillows + bring them outside!

  • Be intentional as you place them on chairs to create a purposeful flow of color + pattern.

3. Embrace the mismatch

  • No one expects you to have a matching set of 10 of anything. Pull together enough dishes + glasses to comfortably host your party

  • Collect colorfully patterned dessert plates + small bowls for a charming look.

  • Thrift Tip: To build your collection, keep an eye out at the thrift store for fun dishware + glassware that brings you joy

4. Bring the indoors out

  • Create a lush green space by moving your indoor plants to your outdoor party space.

  • Use a variety of tall, medium + small plants to add variety. Add small plants to tables + place tall plants on the ground

5. Repurpose, repurpose, repurpose

  • Curtains and vintage sheets make brillant table + chair coverings.

  • Try draping a cloth over an undesirable chair option to add interest + whimsy

  • Add a blanket for a casual look + be prepared when the summer evening cools off

  • Thrift Tip: Check estate sales + the thrift store for floral sheets

6. More is more

  • This is the time to layer pattern, color + texture to create a lush, “Anthropology” style look

  • Flowers are always a great choice to add feminine charm. Purchase flower bunches from the grocery store or cut from your backyard to build your own bouquets.

  • Be creative when thinking about what to use for additional decorations. I’ve been using the same paper lanterns left over from our 2011 wedding for every party since.

  • Thrift Tip: Check the thrift store for used party decorations to add a whimsical, playful touch.

7. Light it up

  • The sun may be up longer this time of year, but twinkle lights are always a magical touch. Pull out your Christmas lights or try candles if you don't have string lights.

  • Don’t forget a scented candle or oil diffuser to deter the bugs.

8. Set the table

  • Prepare a table where your guests can arrange their food items easily.

  • Have empty bowls on hand for chips + other loose items. Include cheese knives + serving spoons, too.

  • A cutting board, or two, is ideal for displaying cheese + meat. For especially hot nights, place a cutting board over a tray of ice to ensure the cheese + meat stay cool

9. Stock the bar

  • Provide a pitcher of spa water to make your guests feel fancy + make sure everyone stays hydrated. What is spa water? It’s just water with fruit + herbs mixed in. Find a recipe on Pinterest or mix what is available from your garden. Mint + cucumber are always a good choice, orange slices are another simple options.

  • Make a soda syrup + sparkling water for a non-alcohol beverage option. I love this homemade strawberry + rhubarb soda syrup recipe because it uses up my garden rhubarb.
Prep Tip: Make it in advance + keep it in the freezer until the day of the party.

  • Purchase enough wine to keep the party going. One bottle for two people is a good estimate. Don’t forget to have the wine opener handy.

  • Keep wine + sparkling water chilled in a cooler.

  • Have ice available in an ice bucket or bowl

*Bonus* | Pick a title + Use Evite

  • My friends know my party as the Rosé party. Other ideas: Rosé + Charcuterie, Summer Solstice or Summer Soirée

  • Design an invitation using Evite + manage your guest list online.

  • Create a “what to bring” list to make it easy for guests to select items to contribute. Keep the list generic: fruit, veg, hard cheese, soft cheese, bread, crackers, dip, etc

  • Send out reminders for guests to RSVP + select their food contribution
